Figure 2
Immunoperoxidase labeling for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and immunogold localization of the dopamine transporter (DAT) in axon terminals in the nucleus accumbens core of rat brain.  A, B: Diffuse peroxidase immunoreactivity for TH is seen surrounding many small synaptic vesicles in axon terminals that also show plasmalemmal immunogold particles (small arrows) indicating the presence of DAT.  In A, the dually labeled terminal is apposed to an unlabeled dendritic spine and presynaptic terminal (UT) that forms an asymmetric synapse (open arrowhead).  In B, the immunoreactive terminal forms symmetric synapses (curved arrows) with two unlabeled dendrites (UD).  DAT gold particles are mainly distributed along non-synaptic portions of the plasma membrane.  Bar= 0.2 μm.
