Subcellular distribution of receptor and transporter proteins regulating the dynamics of DA neurotransmission in the dorsolateral striatum and prelimbic cortex. DA fibers innervating prelimbic cortex have a low density of DA transporter and the transporter is located a distance from the synaptic release sites, suggesting that DA may diffuse a greater distance in this brain region. If the extra-synaptic DA plays a role in chemical signaling it must gain access to receptor proteins. However, in both dorsolateral striatum and prelimbic cortex, dopamine receptor proteins exhibit a specific, rather than diffuse subcellular distribution, suggesting that a paracrine-like action of this neurotransmitter is unlikely.
