On March 25, Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.), chairman of the Committee on Indian Affairs, along with vice chair Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) and committee member Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) held an oversight hearing to discuss the rising rate of youth suicides in states with large Native American populations and the urgent need for additional mental health care resources.  
   

AFSP Medical Director Dr. Paula Clayton was among the many experts to testify, stating that the most important way to prevent suicide is to recognize and treat mental disorders such as depression and substance abuse that can lead to suicide.
